Group Psychotherapy

Group therapy is a cornerstone of my work. It can be an important component in an individual’s therapeutic journey. I lead general psychotherapy groups for adults and those specifically for gay men. Our sessions are dynamic, experiential, based on state-of-the-art group therapy theory, research and practices. Group members continue individual psychotherapy but in a group context.

My groups stayed together virtually and, in fact, thrived during the Covid-19 shutdown. Members supported one and another in meaningful ways, especially through the months of isolation. In response to the increasing need for counseling, I’ve added a new group for adults on Wednesday afternoons.

As we move out of the pandemic, I continue offering both in-person and secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual sessions. The members of my groups and I discussed continuing to make our sessions safe spaces for everyone. As a result, all my groups are hybrids: we meet in person on the first session of each month and then remotely each week thereafter.

Adult Group Psychotherapy

Limited to eight members, our groups are made up of women and men who reflect the multi-racial and international community that is Washington, D.C. Members are single, married and divorced. During weekly, 75-minute sessions, participants grow to know one another well in a close, supportive and confidential experience.

Gay Men’s Group Therapy

Working with gay men has been a passion of mine since I began my practice. As a result, Matthew Weissman, Ph.D., and I founded the Affirmative Psychotherapy Group in 1992 to serve this community. Together and separately, we offer several groups on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at varying times.

Group members continue individual psychotherapy but in a group context. This is an opportunity for gay men to speak with one another about their lives. They come to know one another over a long period of time and become deeply involved in each others lives. There is no outside contact between members, which allows the work to develop within a community of like-minded men in a supportive, safe and confidential setting.
